The Mountain Skills (MS)
The MS training scheme is for hill walkers. The course provides all the basic skills required to walk safely and competently in Ireland, when accompanied by people of similar ability. The training does not include leadership skills /techniques. It is suitable for near beginners to those with considerable experience. Topics covered include route planning, equipment, map-reading, navigation techniques, movement on steep ground and coping with emergencies. Typically the training is divided into two blocks MS1 and MS2, each run over a two day period.

 

The Kilchreest Ramblers currently has 6 members who have completed MS 1 & 2

1. Align the edge of the compass with the starting and finishing point. (Path junction and Rock “+” on the map)

2. Rotate the compass housing until the orienting arrow and lines point N on the map.

3. Rotate the map and compass together until the red end of the compass needle points north.

4. Follow the direction of travel arrow on the compass, keeping the needle aligned with the orienting arrow on the housing.

How to use a compass

Using the compass with a map
